BTCC 2019: Thruxton Preview
The KwikFit British Touring Car Championship arrives at the Thruxton circuit this weekend for rounds 7,8 and 9 of the 2019 campaign.
Thirty of the UK's best tin top drivers have already been duking it out at Brands Hatch and Donington Park, producing five different race winners in the process. Current BTCC champion Colin Turkington is currently the only driver in the field to win more than one race so far this season which has catapulted him to third in the standings, just behind BTC Racing's Josh Cook and the BMR Subaru of Ashley Sutton, the latter of which has yet to hit the top step this year.
The BTCC continues to get closer and closer year by year and this year is no exception, with just 25 points separating the top eight drivers and 13 different drivers gracing the rostrum at some point so far. This is an amazing stat considering we are only coming up to what is the third weekend of the season.
The first two meetings have thrown up plenty of surprises and action packed racing which looks set to continue at Thruxton this weekend. A circuit that is always a firm favourite for the drivers.
Race winners from the opening two weekends included Josh Cook, Andrew Jordan, Rory Butcher and Tom Ingram. All of these drivers in particular will be looking to "double up" and get more points on the board as the season progresses starting this weekend.
A whole host of other drivers up and down the field have shown the pace and potential to win this season and as with the norm in the BTCC, they are all queuing up to take the top step. Ashley Sutton will be a man to watch this weekend, having shown incredible race craft at the opening two rounds mean he leads the way coming into this weekend, despite not taking a win yet. Hampshire's very own Rob Collard will be looking to score heavily at his home circuit and build on his podium finish in the third race at Donington Park and Tom Oliphant is also a man on a mission following his first BTCC podium last time out.
Thruxton is a very unique circuit and is like nothing else on the calendar. Its the fastest in the UK and is a pure power circuit. Lets see how the weekend unfolds.
