FIA World Motorsport Council decisions affecting the FIA WEC
On the 6th December 2017 the FIA World Motorsport Council announced some changes which will affect the 2018/19 FIA World Endurance Championship, Super Season.
Whilst most of these changes were already known about, this meeting has set these changes in stone for the upcoming season. Of note, there are several changes around the LMP1 category to take into account the current lack of 'factory teams', most notably the overall World Champion title from now on will be awarded to a 'Team' in the LMP1 category rather than the manufacturer.
Further changes for the LMP1 category include the removal of the LMP1 HY class to form one as before class covering LMP1 cars. There is also a series of proposals to homogenise the performance of the hybrid and non-hybrid cars to allow an even playing field.
To account for the 2 Le Mans races and the extended race at Sebring there has been a modification to the point structure covering the "Super Season". Le Mans will see a reduction from the current double points of 50 points to 38 points for a win, and Sebring will see 32 points awarded for a win.
A visual change which fans will see, and some may welcome, is the return to the allowance of work being carried out on the car whilst refuelling is being completed. This will include tyre changes, screen cleaning etc. as previously reported. It is yet to be seen if the amount of equipment will be altered to include 2 wheel guns as per the ELMS regulation change.
There have also been some changes to the titles and trophies which will be awarded at the end of the season.
The following four World Championship titles will be awarded:
FIA World Endurance Championship for LMP Drivers
FIA World Endurance Championship for LMP1 Teams
FIA World Endurance Championship for LMGTE Drivers
FIA World Endurance Championship for LMGTE Manufacturers
The following Trophies will be awarded:
An FIA Endurance Trophy awarded to the best LMP2 team
An FIA Endurance Trophy awarded to the best LMGTE AM team
An FIA Endurance Trophy awarded to the best LMP2 driver(s)
An FIA Endurance Trophy awarded to the best LMGTE AM driver(s)
