After a 26-year absence from Le Mans, Mercedes-AMG is set to make its return to the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2025. Partnering with the Italian powerhouse Iron Lynx, the German manufacturer will enter the LMGT3 class with two Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evos.
Iron Lynx, a familiar face in WEC, switches from Lamborghini machinery to the AMG GT3 platform after a successful run that included three podium finishes and a strong presence in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. With their DNA rooted in endurance racing, Iron Lynx looks poised to hit the ground running in this new chapter.
"The Right Moment for Le Mans Return"
Mercedes-AMG’s Head of Motorsport, Christoph Sagemüller, couldn’t hide his excitement: “It’s no secret that we’ve been very keen for some time to bring the three-pointed star back to Le Mans. The 2025 season with the FIA WEC entry is the right moment. Our successful Mercedes-AMG GT3 and the experienced Iron Lynx team is the right pairing to set another milestone in our Customer Racing success story.”
For Iron Lynx Team Principal Andrea Piccini, this partnership is the perfect fit: “We are extremely proud to welcome Mercedes-AMG as a partner. With such strong support, I am confident we will be able to be competitive from the outset. Endurance racing is rooted in our DNA, and FIA WEC is definitely its pinnacle.”
After running Ferrari's, Porsche's and Lambo's, Iron Lynx now switches to Mercedes
Preparation for a Challenging Season
Homologating the Mercedes-AMG GT3 for WEC’s LMGT3 class has been a rigorous process, including wind tunnel tests and the addition of torque-sensor drive shafts. These adjustments ensure the cars meet the championship’s performance criteria.
With preparations in full swing, the first confirmed drivers for the campaign are Iron Lynx veterans Claudio Schiavoni and Matteo Cressoni. Schiavoni, part of a podium-finishing crew at Spa earlier this year, will pilot the #60 AMG, while Cressoni, a five-time WEC podium finisher, takes the wheel of the #61 car.
